Effect of Screening of Intermicellar Interactions on the Linear and Nonlinear Rheology of a Viscoelastic Gel

چکیده
We report our studies of the linear and nonlinear rheology of aqueous solutions of the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate (CTAT) with varying amounts of sodium chloride (NaCl). The CTAT concentration is fixed at 42mM and the salt concentration is varied between 0mM to 120mM. On increasing the salt (NaCl) concentration, we see three distinct regimes in the zero-shear viscosity and the high frequency plateau modulus data. In regime I, the zero-shear viscosity shows a weak increase with salt concentration due to enhanced micellar growth. The decrease in the zero-shear viscosities with salt concentration in regimes II and III can be explained in terms of inter-micellar branching. The most intriguing feature of our data however, is the anomalous behavior of the high frequency plateau modulus in regime II (0.12 ≤ [NaCl] [CTAT ] ≤ 1.42). In this regime, the plateau modulus increases with an increase in NaCl concentration. This is highly counter-intuitive, since the correlation length of concentration fluctuations and hence the plateau modulus G◦ are not expected to change appreciably in the semi-dilute regime. We propose to explain the changes in regime II in terms of the unbinding of the organic counterions (tosylate) from the CTA surfaces on the addition of NaCl. In the nonlinear flow curves of the samples with high salt content, significant deviations from the predictions of the Giesekus model for entangled micelles are observed.

Effect of silica colloids on the rheology of viscoelastic gels formed by the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate.
The effects of the addition of submicrometer-sized colloidal silica spheres on the linear and nonlinear rheology of semidilute solutions of a viscoelastic gel are studied. For a 1.4 wt% solution of the surfactant CTAT, a peak in the zero-shear rate viscosity eta(0) is observed at approximately equal weight percents of silica and CTAT. This peak shifts to lower silica concentrations on increasin...
متن کاملA Study on Ratio of Loss to Storage Modulus for the Blood Clot
In this study the rheology of blood clot is measured with the help of rotational rheometer. Several shear strain (0.5, 1 and 2%) are applied with two frequencies (5 and 10 Hz) from the incipient time of clot formation and the response of the sample is measured with the form of shear stress and the phase lag which is interpreted with storage and loss moduli. In this study the ratio of loss to st...
متن کاملRheology of gastric mucin exhibits a pH-dependent sol-gel transition.
Gastric mucin, a high molecular weight glycoprotein, is responsible for providing the gel-forming properties and protective function of the gastric mucus layer. Bulk rheology measurements in the linear viscoelastic regime show that gastric mucin undergoes a pH-dependent sol-gel transition from a viscoelastic solution at neutral pH to a soft viscoelastic gel in acidic conditions, with the transi...

In this paper, the nonlinear vibration analysis of a thin cylindrical shell made of Functionally Graded Material (FGM) resting on a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation under compressive axial and lateral loads is studied. Nonlinear governing coupled partial differential equations of motions (PDEs) for cylindrical shell are derived using improved Donnell shell theory. The equations of motions (EOM...

In the present study, an analytical investigation on the entropy generation examination for viscoelastic fluid flow involving inclined magnetic field and non-linear thermal radiation aspects with the heat source and sink over a stretching sheet has been done. The boundary layer governing partial differential equations were converted in terms of appropriate similarity transformations to non-line...
